Why the new concern over hand sanitizers?

In recent days, reports are being made of hand sanitizers that contain a very toxic substance; wood methanol.  In an article written By Mark DeCambre, June 24, 2020 in “Market Watch,” the FDA warns of 9 toxic hand sanitizers.

Shelter in Place Household Chores for Kids

Ugh!  Do we have to?  Is probably the response you get when instructing your children with the message that they need to do some chores around the house. 

Though that will probably be their response, once they get working, they might enjoy the work.  (I am using the word “enjoy” loosely!) If you children have not been doing chores, there is no better time than right now, in our shelter in place status.

While your son or daughter was at school, he/she was expected to keep his/his personal area neat and tidy.  The teacher had set times for various activities.  Your child knew that at 9:00 am they did ____ and at 10:00 came______ lunch would follow after______ and recess would be _____time.  The point being; your child had a very scheduled daily routine. 

Granted, at home you cannot have the same rigidity that your child had at school, however, having a daily structure:  morning/afternoon/evening WILL go a long way toward giving your child a sense of security while helping to keep your sanity.

A bonus for you: a structured day cuts down on childhood boredom which in turn leads toward sibling fighting.

Create ONE HABIT in 2020 for Optimal Success!

After the holidays is the perfect time to hit “reset” on maintaining a clean and tidy living environment.

Too often we create grandiose New Year’s Resolutions that merely become a To-Do List for the first two weeks of the New Year.  Additionally, studies have shown that less than 25% of people actually stay committed to their resolutions that first month.  Sad statistics that are not very promising, don’t you agree?

Rather than creating New Year’s Resolutions, decide on ONE HABIT you are going to do that will help you maintain a green clean and tidy home in 2020!

What is ONE HABIT you would love to say, at the end of 2020, that you were glad became a part of your green clean lifestyle?

So…how do you narrow it down to only ONE HABIT to change this New Year? 

Hosting Holiday Guests: Cleaning Checklist

When my kids were younger and we were deep cleaning the home together, they would ask me, “Mom, who is coming over?”  It seemed that company spurred on deep cleaning.

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to having company over, especially if hosting overnight guests, I get stressed about wanting to have my home look “just so.” 

If you are on “overwhelm mode,” use the following guest cleaning checklist as your holiday cleaning strategy.

Holiday cleaning checklist:

 Brightly Green Cleaners-- safely and naturally cleans homes for your family & guests!

Two weeks out:

Shampoo carpets:  Spot clean first with Brightly Green Carpet and Upholstery Spot Remover.

Clean oven:  I like to use a paste of baking soda and water, for a non-toxic clean. Leave the paste on the inside surface of your oven for a couple of hours (or overnight) then wipe clean!

Wash doors and doorframes: Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner is great for doors!  You’d be surprised to see how much dirt/dust sticks vertically to surfaces!

One Week out:

Clean light fixtures: Remove cooled fixtures (if possible) and wash in warm water with Brightly Green Hand Dish Wash or wipe clean with Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner.  While you’re at it, wipe cooled light bulbs with a dry cloth.

Hunt down cobwebs and eliminate them!  Look up.  They like to “hang out” in corners and ceilings.

48 hours out:

Mop wood floors (and laminate wood floors) with Brightly Green Wood Floor Cleaner

Dust surfaces with Brightly Green Wood Floor Cleaner

24 hours out:

Clean bathrooms with Brightly Green Bathroom Cleaner (use on sinks, toilets and tub/showers)

Tidy up all rooms

Vacuum floors

Sweep wood/tile floors

Straighten entryway

Make sure entrance is free of snow and is safe to walk on. 

One hour out:

Sit down and put your feet up!

Common Everyday Household Chores Burns Calories

We all know that our Thanksgiving celebration is a time to get together and share with family and friends a meal of thanksgiving.  It’s all about the meal and being together.  It is the one time of the year that most Americans set aside their diets and enjoy the familiar favorites that Grandma or Aunt Sue, always makes. 

We finish the meal together and turkey coma sets in, ensuing a fight over the recliners. The holiday mode has begun.  Once we’ve had our Thanksgiving meal; taking a side-step from our regular eating habits, we become more open to indulging at various other holiday gatherings.  Office parties, family and neighborhood get-togethers, etc.  Before we know it, our healthy eating habits are beginning to head down the drain.

Stop holiday weight gain before it begins--get moving!! 

Before you decide to set up that holiday gym membership, ask yourself, “how active can I be?” 

You burn calories in many other ways besides exercising!  NEAT, “non-exercise activity thermogenesis,” stands for the calories (energy) you burn doing anything expect sleeping, eating, or exercising.

So, going back to Thanksgiving… before rushing to the recliner, work together cleaning up after the meal.  Doing dishes by hand (for 30 minutes) burns over 160 calories.  Brightly Green Clean the kitchen countertops and sweep up the floor and you’ll burn even more calories.

If you still feel the need to relax on the recliners, don’t stay there too long.  Get up in a little bit  and get moving again.

Do a family activity together that requires body movement and you’ll burn an additional 150 calories for a half hour of activity.

Walk your dog for 30 minutes; both you and Fido will benefit from the outing while working off  at least 140 calories. 

Research for yourself other ideas of NEAT calorie burning activities.
