Depending on where you reside, you may be spending a
lot of time indoors right now. (My minivan did not even want to be outside this
week! It refused to start—a number of
times!) When the elements keep us cooped
up indoors longer than we would like, we need to think creatively to help our
kids not go stir crazy.
My mother used to say to my brothers and I, “If you
have nothing to do, I’ll give you something to do.” That was never the response we wanted to hear
concerning our boredom. I have caught
myself saying that very same phrase to my own children, it’s funny how we end
up repeating the very things we did not like to hear as kids!
There is a way that you could strategically get your
children’s help around the home that could be a win-win for everyone!
De-clutter and re-organize the game room or
family room as a family.
Here’s the
strategy:
- Get four boxes and label two of them: For Keeps and
the other two label: “Give Away”
- Have your children go through their video games and
put them in either a “For Keeps” box or a “Give Away” box.
- Take your “Give Away”
box of video games to a game store that buys used video games and use the money
toward the purchase of a new video game, (or new-used game).
- Do the same with your family board games. You may even find games your children have
outgrown. Talk about the memories you
have of playing the games, and how much your children have grown. I have enjoyed seeing my children’s eyes
light up when they run across an old toy or game and then exclaim, “I remember
when I used to play…!”
- Consider giving your used board games to a local
resale shop, and then treat your kids to a new board game to use on Family Game Night!
So the kids are happy to have a new game and you are
happy to have an organized game/family room!
There you have it; a Win-Win!
Every step you can take to keep clutter at bay, will save
you time when it comes to cleanup.
Having to vacuum and dust around clutter is not a time saver, nor is
playing the hunting game when you are looking for just the right board game to
play on family game night. Keep your
home simply and green clean.
