A Greener, Healthier Easter!

So, you’re adopting a personal lifestyle that reflects an awareness and concern for the environment.  Your problem is when it comes to holidays; you have trouble staying eco-friendly. 

Though we may have made personal changes, we often go back to “default” mode when it comes to holiday planning. We may be afraid to “lose” a special tradition if we make the holiday environmentally friendly. 

Becoming more aware of the environment does not mean everything has to change!  Making our holidays reflect our concern for the environment can be as simple as taking a few small steps. 

Here are some examples reflective of our upcoming holiday—Easter:

Keep the Easter basket!  Substitute shredded paper for plastic Easter grass, or line basket with new colorful socks.

Keep the Easter goodies!  Replace with organic, Fair Trade chocolate and other organic candies.  Make your child’s favorite cookies and put that in the basket along with a special present.  Maybe coins or dollar bills would make your child more happy than the money spent on store-bought candy (it would be better on their teeth!).

If you have food allergies in your family, you probably want to avoid sugary candies anyway (you would be surprised how many candies actually contain wheat!)  Consider putting fresh strawberries in your re-usable Easter eggs.  Give your children a package of their favorite snack chips or pretzels. 

 

Dye those hard-boiled eggs!  Substitute the chemical-color tablet dyes for natural vegetable dyes.  (Have you ever wondered how safe the colored dye really is when it ends up on the hard-boiled egg white?)

Easter dinner—bring it on!  Substitute organic fruits and vegetables and or local bought foods as much as you can.  Your meal can still be amazing!

 

You don’t have to make drastic changes.  Consider what you CAN change and do it!  Holiday traditions can reflect past traditions while embracing new ones!  What will YOU do to make this Easter Greener?
