Clutter Free: To Keep or not to Keep?

Once you've committed to the idea that "this is it, I need to be clutter free", it becomes a matter of getting in there and doing it.  The next hurdle is knowing what to keep and what to get rid of.

Over the course of several years, I have talked with numerous people concerning their issues with clutter.  The number one question most have had was determining what to get rid of vs. what to keep.

If you struggle with this dilemma ask yourself:

1.) Would you regret not having it?

2.) Have you used the item in the past year?  In the past two years?

3.) Is it a document that would need to be saved for tax audit purposes?

4.) Is the benefit to have more space greater than the benefit/need to keep the item?

5.) Can any other family member benefit from the item if it is held on longer?

Keep in mind…

Saving clothing to pass down from sibling to sibling should not be held on so long that the clothing style becomes outdated.

The same principle applies to fabrics you may be saving to make an outfit out of in the future.  If you wait too long to make the outfit, your fabric may become outdated or the pattern itself may become outdated.

Be realistic with any crafting supplies you have on hand.  Are you really going to make something with those materials?  If so, then set up a goal as to when you will accomplish this project.

It has been said that planning projects around holidays or special events is a great way to accomplish a project.

Be sure to have properly marked boxes so there will be no mistake as to what you are saving/giving to charity or throwing out.  Mark your calendar with a specific day and time when you will take your items to a charitable organization.  Some charitable organizations will even come directly to your home to pick up your unused items.  Make the call and you could be saving yourself time.

Once you've cleared an area, be sure to give that space a good green cleaning.  Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner effectively green cleans many surfaces and would definitely be the cleaner of choice when it comes to wiping down shelves, walls, closet areas, and basements where clutter likes to hide out.
