How can you know if a cleaning product is a natural, sustainable cleaner?

David’s Question:

How can you know if a cleaning product is a natural, sustainable cleaner?
HGL's Answer:
Many manufacturers of cleaners today make claims that their products are environmentally friendly. Sometimes that means that their product is less polluting than another or that has a high degree of biodegradability. For a product to be natural and sustainable, all the ingredients must be derived from vegetation. This means that it is 100% biodegradable and is much safer to use than other types of cleaners. It is a myth that a natural cleaner cannot compete with a cleaner with petroleum derivatives. Brightly Green cleaners are equal or better in performance to corresponding cleaners that are not “green”.

  1. IS it true that BP's green works brand holds almost 50% of the green cleaner market? I find that odd in some way. I wonder if their products have petroleum? I need to get greee=ner in my cleaning but don't trust the products in the store.

  2. Hi Shane,Thank you for your question!
I assume you are referring to Green Works made by Clorox Company. Clorox claims that Green Works products are at least 95% natural. For instance, they claim that their All-Purpose cleaner is 99% natural. Included in that natural category is water that makes up approximately 95% of the product. That means that the 1% unnatural ingredients makes up about 1/5 of the active ingredients. It is well known that Clorox uses a well known preservative, Kathon is extremely hazardous and is made from petroleum. Also the blue and yellow dyes used to make the green color are petroleum derived. If you want to protect your family from hazardous cleaners, you may not want to use cleaners from a company that has made billions selling chlorine.I would be happy to send you some products for your review!
