October is here and with it comes Halloween. Start planning now for Halloween and keep
stress away! If you're tired of the same
old routine of hunting for costumes for your kids—change it up! Get downright
creative and make the costumes this year.
Repurposing what you have on hand is VERY economical and earth friendly too!
Now don't let that suggestion put you into a panic! I am not talking about doing any sewing! Why, I can hardly sew curtain panels together! I am talking about creatively constructing
costumes for your kids. Get them
involved in the process and create a new family night activity! Read on for simple costume suggestions…
Box costumes:
A Die: Cut whole in one
side for head. Paint box white and then
paint appropriate black dots on each side to represent a die.
Birthday cake: Cut
hole in one side for head. Paint box to
look like a birthday cake. Make a candle
"crown" out of poster board and wrap the "candle around your child's
head to look like a birthday candle.
Pizza delivery person:
Dress as a delivery person and carry an empty pizza box in one hand.
Balloon Costumes:
(Recommended for older, mature, elementary aged children)
A Bunch of
Grapes: Have your child wear a black
shirt and black pants. Blow up several
purple balloons then carefully safety pin them to the shirt and pants. (Recommended for older elementary aged
children).
A Bag of Jelly Beans:
Have your child wear either all black or all white shirt and pants. Get a large clear garbage bag and cut two holes
in the bottom, just large enough for your child to comfortably put his/her legs
through. Also cut arm holes. Fill bag with multiple colored balloons. Fasten the top of the bag with tape or safety
pins. Colorful duct tape could be a nice
alternative. Your child's head is NOT in
the bag!!
Scavenger Hunt Costumes:
Look around your home in closets and storage areas for items
you could put together to create a look.
Scarecrows, farmer, princess—all should be fairly easy to put together
from what you already have on hand.
Maybe the basics are there and you would want to look elsewhere for
accessories. Borrow from a friend or go
to your local thrift shop. After painting and gluing, clean up naturally with Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner. The natural go to cleaner for safe clean up!
Be looking at end of week for more simple, green Halloween
ideas! Can Halloween be about giving
rather than getting?? Stay tuned.
