Is Halloween becoming a little "old hat" for
you? Would you like to see your kids
have a good time and yet not come home with so much candy they really don't
need (and their school teachers would not want them to have)?
Put a new spin on your family's Halloween celebrate by giving
your kids a new focus on how they can
give this Halloween. Read on for
inspiring new twists on the holiday! Visit a senior citizen complex:
Arrange with a local nursing home, assisted living complex, or retirement community to pay the residents a Halloween visit. Invite family friends and their children to join you in the expedition of giving.
Since many older citizens have diet restrictions it may
be best to take handmade crafts to give out rather than food goodies. Easy and fun festive crafts could be: painted mini pumpkins or festive fall
decorated door knob hangers. When
visiting the complex, be sure to have your children dress up in their Halloween
garb. Older folks love to see children
dressed up for Halloween!
When our children were younger, we used to take them to
nursing homes around Halloween and the residents just loved the visit. They had fun guessing what they children were
dressed up as!
Celebrate your time of giving with a party at your house
afterward! If you don't want the
children to miss out on candy—have some candy in goodie bags for each one to
take home. Add individual packages of
raisins and beef jerky too! Put in a few educational supplies such as: erasers
and pencils, pencil grippers or crayons!
Choose healthy snacks to serve at your celebration party over
sugar-laden treats; like Ghoulish Grins.
Mini bagel pizzas are always a hit!
Have the kids share their stories of the conversations they had with the
older generation.
When the guests are gone, green clean counters and tabletops with Brightly
Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner or Brightly Green Granite and Tile Cleaner. Give the floor a quick green-clean mop-up with Brightly
Green Wood Floor Cleaner or Brightly Green Multi-Purpose Cleaner and step and
back and congratulate yourself on making this Halloween a green, simple and
giving back Halloween!
Treat rather than trick: Give
door to door
Maybe the timing to eliminate door to door, trick or
treating is not now. You can still
incorporate a spirit of giving during Halloween by giving little, festive decorations
to neighbors as your child visits their door for treats! Your child gives a handmade gift (make by
himself/herself) to a neighbor before receiving the expected treat.
Getting to Give:
While your child is going door to door in the usual fashion
for trick-or-treaters, have him/her carry an extra bag to collect
non-perishable foods for your local food bank.
Arrange a time later in the week to deposit your collection with your
local food bank. Suggest to your son or
daughter to make a contribution himself or herself by going to the local
grocery store and purchasing food to give to the food bank. Your child could use some of his/her own
money to make the purchase. The more
involved your child is in the process of giving, the more value it will hold!Happy Giving this Halloween!
