Closets have often been associated with fear. For children, they fear monsters are in their closets. Thriller movies keep you in suspense because of who may be lurking in the closet.
Closets are sometimes just plan scary--you can get a concussion from whatever falls out of them when you open the door!
Jumpstart your green spring cleaning by taking the fear out of the closets!
Begin with a PERSPECTIVE ADJUSTMENT.
How different would the contents of your closets be if you viewed them as an area "to retrieve" things rather than "to store" things?
Turning your closets into places of retrieval will change
what you put in them, making them serve a higher calling in your
home/apartment. Give them an "upgrade" –an upgraded
purpose!
EMPTY ALL CLOSETS
AT THE SAME TIME
Typically the approach is to purge/organize and clean them
one at a time. However, if you view your
closets as a place to retrieve rather than store items, you will want to
utilize all the closes to the best of their space.
Taking everything out of them at the same time allows you to
get a good look at what you have and then you can more completely and
accurately assess what you need to do with the stuff.
On a personal note:
In the past, I used to purge, organize and green clean my closets one at
a time. A problem I ran into was that I
would organized one and then discover the next closet contained very similar items
that really could have been placed in the previously cleaned closet. The problem was that I only allowed enough
space for what was in the first closet. If I would have emptied all my closets
at once, I would have seen the similar items and then been able to place them
together.
With everything out in the open, create a Master Closet-Retrieval
Plan.
Plan your closets in "zones" based on function and
location. Just because you have a
closet that is probably meant for linens, does not mean you have to use it for
linens. Maybe it would serve a better
purpose for other things you have and would like to easily retrieve.
SPARE YOURSELF
FROM COMMON PITFALLS
1. Don't stop! Complete the job!
2. Don't keep things you do not have the space for.
3. The amount you spent on an item does not mean you have to
keep it. Quit allowing the item to
remind you of the mistake you made purchasing it because it is still hanging
around. * We can learn a lot from others. I find Julie Morgenstern's book,
"Organizing from the Inside Out" to be a great resource. Many of these closet tips have come from her book!
