EWG
(Environmental Working Group) is wrapping up a study they have been researching
regarding household cleaners and their effect on people and the
environment. The research that has come
in so far is quite revealing, to say the least.
This study, entitled
EWG Cleaning Database 2012 “Hall of Shame”, has uncovered a lot of
greenwashing.
In this
extensive research campaign conducted by EWG, many companies who claim to be
green, safe and non-toxic have been discovered to be anything BUT what they
claim to be!
Among the “Worst
of the Worst”—according to EWG is…
Simple Green
Concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner. This
cleaning product claims to be non-toxic and biodegradable and yet it contains
2-butoxyethanol: a solvent that can be absorbed through the skin and damage red
blood cells and also irritate eyes.
Unfortunately,
without much regulation oversight, companies are willing to bend the truth—reports
EWG. Consumers who believe they are
using “all-natural” products are being tricked by falsified labels. The reality is that only a very small
percentage of the cleaner labeled “all-natural” truly is “all-natural”.
